Song of the Day

"Yesterday, All My Troubles Seemed So Far Away!"

WHAT A DAY!!! Despite the fact that I already knew that the seamstress I was working with was (lets just say it) TERRIBLE, I gave him one last shot. So yesterday I went to grab the supposed "remainder" of the dresses and only 4 out of 10 were done and 3 out of that 4 were completely destroyed! I have never seen such terrible work in all my life. Could have done it better myself. So, today I am stuck with the tedious task of arguing with him about why they are terrible and why I want the rest of my dresses back before he gets a chance to ravage them as well. I do suppose however, some good will come of all of this because I am finally making the move to a new seamstress! Wish me luck!

Check out the destruction for yourself:

This lovely seem below is torn at both corners with string dangling and what appears to be white paint smeared across it?! Not to mention it completely puckers outward when its on. Lovely.

And this little number gets at least an inch shorter in back!

And this one has a seam that dips up and down, up and down around the entire dress!

Song of the Day

A Day In My Life

My typical day starts out at 6:50 am. I crawl out of bed, throw on some leggings and a sweatshirt and it's time to wake my 6 year old daughter Kayleigh. We frantically get dressed, brush her teeth and eat breakfast so that we can be out the door by 7:10. If everything runs according to schedule, we can make it to school in time to take advantage of the "drop off lane" which allows me to hide my mess of a self from the other parents until I get a chance to shower and brush my teeth. Then it's back home just in time for me to greet my waking 15 month old boy, Liam.

Liam and I mosey downstairs at 8 am for breakfast and enjoy each other's company until about 10 am when we finally decide to wake my peacefully sleeping boyfriend Hector. Liam works his way up the stairs yelling "DAAAA DAAAAA" and then he bursts into the bedroom and leaps into bead along side Hector. Definitely the easiest way to wake someone up, just let the baby do all the work! It is now that I try to squeeze in some time to blog, run to the seamstress and/or get some thrifting in before Hector has to work and I have to pick Kayleigh up from school at 2.

Dinner is at 6 pm when Hector arrives home from work, then it's bath time and off to bed for the kids (and often an exhausted me) at 8 pm on the dot! So in the midst of the chaos that is my life, I sit here blogging and I realize how incredibly fortunate I am to have such a supportive boyfriend and 2 terrific kids who allow me to not only be a stay at home mother but give me the time and motivation I need to set out on this exciting new business endeavour, Oo-Oui Vintage and Vouge!

What is Oo-Oui Vintage & Vouge?

Oo-Oui Vintage & Vogue is the joint collaboration of myself (Allison Schneider), and my lovely and talented sister Kellie Schneider. This definitely wasn't something that happened overnight.  For some time, I have dreamt of opening a shop that sells vintage / secondhand clothing, but felt that I wanted to add my own personal touch. That's where the idea of reconstructing and improving clothing came into play, which ultimately made this whole thing take off!

Since I can remember, I have been very interested in fashion. As a child, my sister and I designed elaborate costumes using anything we could get our hands on: torn fabric remnants, pillowcases, you name it. As for my interest in thrifting -- well, I can thank my sister for that.

Kellie has always been a bit of a free spirit, especially when it comes to her clothing choices! She would skip around town in a paint soaked tank top, two floor length floral skirts layered on top of one another and a sash tied around her waist. I remember thinking to myself, "what is she wearing?" But it never failed that within a year or two, whatever my sister was wearing would somehow become what was in style. To this day, I remember the first time I tied a sash around my waist. I just couldn't believe that my sister's gypsy look was actually something that I was trying to mimic. One of the most important things I have learned from my sister is that style has nothing to do with the name on the tag of the garment, and everything to do with how you feel in it.

Since then, I have become a vintage / secondhand enthusiast. The concept for Oo-Oui Vintage & Vogue came to me one day when I stumbled upon a beautiful vintage red dress. This dress was so incredibly unique and vibrant that I just had to have it! The only problem was that it was a bit too long, and at the time it wasn't exactly my style. Then it dawned on me! I shouldn't just buy and sell secondhand clothes, but also alter them to make them more wearable today!  Now, after years of dreaming about it, Oo-Oui Vintage & Vouge is finally becoming a reality. Our online shop opens May 15th!

SO Angry

Today was the day that the remainder of the 13 dresses that I took to the seamstress were supposed to be done. I called to make sure they were finished before wasting my time and my $4.15 gas driving to pick them up and despite the fact that he had told me he had a few finished, he had NONE! Out of 13 dresses that he has had for nearly a month, he has finished 2! Needless to say I think its time to find a new seamstress. Ugh, so annoying! Here's to hoping its going to be a better weekend!

Culottes

Culottes! I am absolutely crazy about them! They add such an adorably feminine touch to every outfit. You can wear them long or you can wear them short, just wear them! I love to pair my culottes with some clunky heels or wedges and a solid color tee-shirt (ha obbbviiiooussllllyyy). Here are some fun culotte outfits I love..

Palazzo Pants

Palazzo pants are pants that are loose from the waist all the way to the floor. They have had their share of comebacks throughout history and originated trend-wise sometime in the 1930's. I am happy to say that they are back again! Personally, I love the idea of wearing the palazzo with a very simple top and shoe to keep the look very clean, however hippie-ing them out a bit would be fun too! Here are some of my favorite palazzo looks..

Time For Tea

It wouldn't be accurate to say that the tea length skirt ever really went out of style, but rather people associate it more with being dressed up and seem to have difficulty incorporating them into their casual daily attire. The below the knee (tea length) skirt allows for just enough leg to show off your fabulous shoes and yet at the same time not too much is exposed as to where you find yourself tugging and adjusting all day. Dress it up or dress it down, either way the tea length skirt is the perfect addition to your wardrobe this spring/summer!

To The Floor

I have to admit that I am thrilled about the comeback of the floor length skirt! They are absolute comfort and style all rolled into one. You can accessorize with a belt and some flats or some booties and a long necklace, and your look is complete. Here are a few of my fav trends using maxi-skirts!

Bold patten skirts.
These cognac booties make this lace skirt look somewhat "little house on the prarie" and I love it!

Super simple and chic.

I love the red floral skirt! It resembles a few that we have at Oo-Oui!
More florals.
This skirt is a bit more elegant than the rest, but combined with the white tee and flats it is perfect for everyday!

The Waiting Game

It's been about a week now since I dropped off 13 of my favorite vintage dresses (to be sold on the website) at the seamstress. Since then, I have been anxiously waiting with phone in hand for the call informing me that they are finished! I realize that 13 dresses is a bit of a task, but I simply cannot wait to get some photos of them up! So.. I wait. However, in the anxiety-ridden meantime I will be posting some more sneak peaks later this week, so stay tuned!!

Song of the Day

Movie night

Lately, since receiving Netflix, I have been watching a lot of movies. I am really into watching romantic comedies, serious romance and dramas in particular. So I guess what I am trying to say is that I really like "chick flicks!" (hah) But a few that have really stood out in my mind that I would absolutely recommend watching are as follows..

Never Let Me Go- Is an absolutely gorgeous movie (and soundtrack) about a group of cloned children and their difficult journey into adulthood. They come to the sad realization that they have no real place in this world because the only reason they were "created" was to be harvested for organs. Though just like you and me they have dreams, aspirations and fall in love, their lives will eventually be cut short in order to save the life of another. Such an amazing movie.

The Stoning of Soraya M.- I cant think of another movie that has made me cry this much. Maybe its because I am a mother and this poor woman (Soraya) has her own children turned against her and forced to witness her own gruesome death. The movie (based on a true story) is about an abusive husband who wants to divorce his wife and take their two boys with him so that he can marry a younger woman. If she allowed it to happen her and her two daughters would be left with nothing and most likely starve to death. He falsely accuses her of adultery which needless to say, is a crime that's punishment is death by stoning. This movie makes you feel incredibly grateful that we live in a culture where both sexes are equal.

Little Children- This movie leaves me somewhat speechless. There are two consecutive stories taking place- one of a married mother who is very unhappy in her marriage and actually in her role as as a mother who finds escape in the company of stay at home father who is feeling the stress of not being the sole provider for his family. Second is about a man, who is mentally only about 10 years old, and his struggle with inappropriate sexual urges. I know it sounds incredibly depressing, and it is, but when I was done watching it I actually felt sorry for all of them despite their horrible indiscretions. There was one scene in particular where the "pedophile" goes for a swim at the local pool that I cannot stop thinking about to this day! Watch it and tell me what you think!

Serious Shoe Obsession

Since I have been saving so much money buying all of my clothes from second hand stores, I have found a new obsession that is still managing to keep me in serious debt. If you haven't already guessed by the title, its shoes! I have always had a special place in my heart for shoes but now my love of them has completely taken over my life! I go to sleep thinking about all the different styles that NEED to make their way into my closet and wake up on a mission to purchase!

These are my newest pair.. the Jessica Simpson "Tookie"..

This is me with my new shoes! (terrible pics I know, its hard to do alone) Products from Oo-Oui Vintage in these outfits include the striped blouse, white short sleeve blouse, and the navy blazer!

I also absolutely need to purchase these Jeffrey Campbell "Litas" to wear with some short socks!
